Learn what BGAN satellite technology is and what its applications are

Connecting to the internet and making a phone call at the same time, from anywhere on the planet, except from extreme polar regions, today is possible thanks to one of the most used satellite solutions by several sectors in different areas. This is BGAN, which stands for broadband global area network and which is accessed through a range of small and light satellite terminals, which provide different performance options to meet operational needs within a company.

This satellite solution allows you to provide voice and data on broadband through a compact device with an approximate size of a laptop computer. That is, you or your work team can have a mobile office and perform different tasks such as sending text messages and emails, transferring files, make video calls, videoconferencing, access an intranet, amongst many others, regardless of location, thanks to the BGAN network.

Which sectors use this technology?

Since BGAN technology provides affordable mobile broadband services, with speeds of up to a half megabit, through the most advanced commercial communications satellites in orbit; it represents an indispensable tool in sectors and companies that work in remote areas and/or under difficult weather conditions, which are characterized for having access to unreliable or non-existent telecommunications networks.

Massive media, military transport on land and sea, emergency services and engineering companies are some of the sectors and clients that use this network the most, since their operations often face communication barriers and the network operation is easier since it does not require a positioning of the terminal.

It is necessary to emphasize that the size of the BGAN terminal depends on the need of each client and sector. For example, smaller terminals are designed to accommodate individual users and, on the other hand, larger terminals offer WLAN capability and are particularly suitable for small teams that need to establish a temporary office for a longer term, and are also suitable for users who require greater bandwidth to allow applications such as live streaming.

What advantages does it have over other solutions?

When compared to other antennas or satellite networks that are on the market, one of the main advantages of BGAN, is that it does not need technical expertise or training to configure and use the network, since all its terminals are plug and play and in this way you can be online in minutes.

On the other hand, because BGAN services are provided through the Inmarsat-4 network, with 99.9% availability in terrestrial and satellite networks, it can be connected from anywhere on the planet.

Likewise, it stands out that BGAN technology meets military and government security requirements and it is compatible with all major VPN products and encryption standards, with a range of guaranteed on demand IP transmission rates from 32kbps to at least 384kbps, and up to 450kbps with BGAN X-Stream.
